Slender Man RPG Empty
PostSubject: Slender Man RPG   Slender Man RPG EmptyFri Jun 24, 2011 9:27 pm

This is me looking for any potential interest in a Slender Man RPG (yes, there is a difference between an RP and an RPG)

I first got the idea when making my World of Slender Man post; while writing it, I kept saying to myself, "Ya know, this sounds like it would be a fun setting to run a game in." I'm open to discussion on the confines of the setting; whether it should be an isolated, localized game focusing on the personal horror of Slendy, or a Mythos branching story which draws on facets from all across the spectrum.

I'd likely be using the rule system from Hunter: The Vigil, as it's suited for regular humans going against incredibly powerful supernatural forces and I'm already familiar with it. I will work with anyone unfamiliar with the rules, and they're not too difficult to catch on (I personally find most games produced by White Wolf to be easier to understand than D&D, though that might just be me.)

Also, I'd prefer to have it be play by post based, rather than real time, if only because of scheduling difficulties. Like most other things, that's negotiable, and if they're enough support for real time game, I may bow out to the will of the people.

So, yays? Naes? Suggestions? Criticisms? Marriage proposals?

If this does end up happening, I definitely want to join. However, I'm not familiar with Hunter: The Vigil, so that might be a problem.

Familiarity with the setting isn't necessary, as I'm only borrowing the rules, nothing else.

The rules aren't extremely overly complex (and they're going go to be even more simple with me cutting out endowments, conspiracies, and other stuff which doesn't fit into the Mythos....) The game uses a d10 system. You have two sets of stats, attributes and skills. Now, let's say that you are driving your truck (with whirling knives and baseball bats attached to it) and you've decided to run over Morningstar (who just happens to be crossing the road at the time). The GM decides on a difficulty level between 2-10 (6 if usually the level used for most situations, so we'll use 6 in this example.) Then we'd take your dexterity attribute (which, let's say, is 3) and you're drive skill (how about a 2). Those combine to make 5, so you roll 5 different 10 sided die. Every dice which rolls above the difficulty level (6 in this example) counts as a success; the more successes you have, the better you do at your task.

So here on your 5 die, you roll a 3, 7, 8, 4, and 6. That's two successes, which the GM decides is enough to run down a proxy. And thus The Morning Hunter blog comes to an untimely close. Sad

Did that provide any helpingness?

Omega is this some sort of mad attempt to get me re-involved in the mythos?
Because you know how much I love Vigil.

Or is it an attempt to never update the Omegia Game again?
Hmmmmmm, Hmmmmmmmmm, Hmmmmmmm?
Well you've gotten my attention enough to post on here after like 2 months...
And I do have my cop from Setoth's last 1-shot.

Hmmm, you are a terrible terrible little man Omega, I have life things to deal with and now you're tempting me with this on top of Bill & Ted's Exalted Adventure, Prism, and D&D... Consider me interested I suppose.

Edit:
To Omega's prospective players:

Hunter the Vigil is a game set in White Wolf's "New World of Darkness" line of games. It focuses on humanity defending itself from the untold horrors that most people write off as creatures of fiction, children's boogeymen, or a vagrant's drug induced hallucinations. While I'm unaware of what my dear friend is planning I can tell you about the typical themes the games tend to take and the flexibility of the setting and even a bit about mechanics, though I doubt those will be so important in a setting like this.

The Vigil is probably one of the most hopeless games in nWoD. It's common folk facing off against something they neither understand or in some cases are even willing to fully believe (sound familiar?). Protagonists range (as they do in most any setting) from virtuous priests to common thugs to unfortunate office workers to beat cops, basically any type of typical joe you'll meet in real life. They get pulled into something beyond their comprehension however and are forced to fight or from this unknown entity. They also usually don't make out so well.

As for flexibility... they canon setting shares it's universe with world controlling vampires, spirit protecting werewolves, Frankenstein's monsters who's very existence creates hatred towards them, and ghost infested guardians given a second chance at life. But then you can also run this. http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2010/03/genre/horror/world-of-darkness-candle-cove/

Mechanic's wise it's pretty simple. You get three sets of stats and three sets of corresponding abilities. You decide if you want to be Social, Physical, or Intelligence oriented and then lay down some points to flesh out your strengths in the Social, Physical, and Intelligence based aspects of life. Rolls are made simply from combining stat pools and skill pools. No worrying about perks or special abilities or any of that other nonsense. You are a poor pathetic human against the terror of night.

Good luck with that...

Re-Edit:
It should also be noted that Omega is my favorite internet DM on our little roleplaying site.
Though nothing compares to Setoth's RL games.

Hey, I'm updating the Omegia game. Not my fault that the other players are refusing to be productive with their time and spend the sessions wandering around a village while you're forced to twiddle your thumbs and wait. Wink

Haha, I know man, no worries... maybe if I cut Blue's head off in our next battle he'll find it a little harder to investigate EVERYTHING!

I can also vouch for Omega's skill as an Internet DM. And the nWoD skills and abilities and such are real easy to pick up so anyone who doesn't have experience with it really shouldn't worry.

I know I said I wasn't going to be on here anymore but Riunin said you were interested in running it and didn't see it on the Haven, so I guessed you meant here. Read this, just wanted to make a quick edit.

The system you're referring to is Old World of Darkness (OWoD) which Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, etc. Hunter: The Vigil is New World of Darkness, which uses a slightly different rule set. The biggest change from this description is that difficulties are static at 8+. Meaning all 8,9, and 10 are successes and 1-7 are fails. There are no botches anymore (if you rolled more 1's than successes horrible, horrible, and often funny things happened to the dice-roller) and 10's let you roll another dice to try again.

There's other minor stuff, and the combat isn't quite good unless you used the combat hacks from one of the later NWoD books, but all that will probably be taken care of in the background by Omega so it's not really pertinent.

That's what I get for playing too much OWoD and not paying attention to the new stuff. Laughing

So yes. What Setoth said.

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun! Dunno how I'd get involved or how I'd learn how to play, but I could see myself enjoying said campaign quite a bit! Smile

Though hearing about something like this happening just makes me want to create my own rule set to run a Slender Man adventure. I may just do it as well.

I've only played D&D, not any WoD stuff, though. I've always wanted to try playing Call of Cthulhu, because have a Sanity stat seemed awesome.

I've got the source books, and now just need to read through them.

But most importantly, I need to know: Would you rather have a vanilla Slender Man game, focused on personalized horror and regular people going being haunted by an eldritch monster? Or a full on, the entire Mythos setting, with all the wonderful madness from every story (proxies in killdozers, the PTC battling supernatural creatures, warring government organizations, all that craziness from AmaglamationSage's blog, etc.)? Or somewhere between the two?

For those who don't have actual dice, this is pretty nifty. Just enter in the number of dice in the d10 slot and press roll.
