Frankly, I watched this episode quite a few times when I was little, but I just watched it a bit ago and it suddenly became more disturbing when I realize Tom and Jerry were sitting on railroad tracks and about a second before the episode ended you could hear the horn of an oncoming train.

I really should have joined this thread during the day.

God that was creepy. I actually thought it was kinda funny in a sense, but it was mostly extremely confusing and strange and creepy.

Watching suicidemouse.avi kind of freaked me out after reading the creepypasta about it. If you really want to be freaked out, creepypastas are the way to go.

I'm going to have to vehemently disagree with you on that one. Creepypastas generally aren't.

With the right creativity and style to it, it can be. Especially if the story is about something that could be plausible.

I don't think I've ever read a creepypasta that caused me to lose sleep. The only plausible creepy things I've seen use atmospheric things to affect me.

I don't know if it was just me, but this one made me lose sleep. I read it in the dark, and it was the first one I ever read though, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

When I first saw jadusable/BEN DROWNED, I had no idea what a creepypasta was. I just saw the jadusable videos, and had no idea what they were, and I was half way through my 4th playthrough of Majoras Mask. Because I had no idea, I thought it was real because I had no context for it. And it caused me many sleepless nights.

Not knowing that it's just a story and a fabrication can definitely cause some scares.

Well, yes, but the reverse is true. Knowing that something is a creepypasta going in completely kills the creepiness. Kind of like the "normalpornfornormalpeople" site revival. I knew it was bullshit going in, thus, not scared.

Yes, the Creepypasta label is pretty much the kiss of death for suspension of disbelief. There needs to be some scope for the imagination, I think. Plausibility isn't the only issue; there's also the whole "if this is real, why is it not on the news?" angle.

Well, the whole "why isn't it on the news" doesn't bother me so much. The news is pretty damned terrible in my estimation.

I've noticed a bit of a surge on Facebook lately, of "chain" images that say something like "SHARE AND 'LIKE' THIS PHOTO AND POST '88' IN THE COMMENTS AND YOU'LL SEE A SURPRISE" or something along those lines.
Lots of people seem to go for it, but stuff like that is a sticking point for me. When someone says "this mysterious YouTube video causes people to have morning sickness" or whatever, there's no scope for the imagination there; I can just say "no, it doesn't", and move on. I suppose the issue I have with it is that there's really not much mystery in technology. There can be mystery about where a video comes from, but it's sort of hard to believe that this one video has found a magic glitch that somehow defies explanation in something entirely man-made. Best equivalent I can think of is when Microsoft Word's spellchecker used to mix up "Zzzzz" and "Sex"; it's there, you know it's there, but you know someone put it there and you know they did it as a prank or something. You can't think "maybe this was done by pixies or magic", because there's no scope for the imagination.
This, to me, is why anyone writing this kind of thing needs to watch every episode of Jonathan Creek.

Yeah, tech is really pretty functionally glitch-proof in this fashion. Closest I've ever come is a rather bizarre action I noticed in some of my old programs. But it was programmer error, not anything supernatural.
Maybe we're just too skeptical (or sceptical if you like) about this sort of thing?

I don't know. I mean, the elemental still has a more visceral power to unsettle or terrify. We pretty much understand fire now, but it still has potential, you know?

That raises the point that the only things we truly fear are things we don't understand and things we understand all too well.
