What would a Runner need?

Post by CuteWithoutThe on Sat Jul 21, 2012 1:24 am

Yo, Slender homies! Your boy Cute withouttheE from The Fear Mythos here. Just checkin in with a question for all you real dogs out there.

Okay quitting that tone now haha.

Anyways, I have a question.

What items and things would an average Runner need before embarking on their doomed escape from the Slender dude?

Just, like general items one can get from like a department or grocery store, yknow?

Well, you'd need water, and probably some food (non-perishable would be best). If you haven't killed anyone, then take some ID or a passport. A weapon of some sort. A knife or a bat would work wonders, but the more inconspicuous the better. Money. First aid kit.

Or, just look at proxiehunters post on the subject! He covers it better then I can.

Your dammed in the end either way. Why postpone the inevitable?

@shayde: Thank you, fellow comrade of FearMythosia!!

@redaustin101: Errrr. What? Excuse me, but I don't... own or possess anything called a "dammed?" What's a dammed? : o

Unless... were you saying "you're?"

Well, sir, I don't really live near any dams, so I'm pretty sure I'm not dammed. Unless... unless you meant it with an n! Oh! Well, sir, not really.

See, this is fiction! The Slender Man ain't real. So I am, personally, not in any danger. Unless you meant "you" as in the fictional character I am bound to be using for whatever I'm planning. Well, that may be true... but if my character just kills himself because there's no use in trying to escape, where's the fun in that?

And anyways, postponing the inevitable is one of humanity's specialties. We are really good at being stubborn about our ultimate deaths.Even if it doesn't make any logical sense.

And also, running = saving your family, sometimes. If you run, the beast would most likely follow you, thus saving your family. As long as you're living with a family that is. As I am still 17 years old, I do happen to still live at home. So I would never, under any circumstances, just go "fuck it" and off myself. Because then the ones I love most are exposed to some faceless man.

Also, if Proxie happens to be looking at this thread right now... proxie, would you have a list of things a high schooler would be able to afford? <___<

Yea sorry I am really tired so my grammar is probably not going to be the best and I meant to type damned. In a fictional manner of course.

Yeah cute, caught your shout on the Fear Mythos forums and came to post that link right there. Make sure to read the comments, one of GV's characters (don't recall if it was Penny, Tarra or Jeanette) pointed out that I'd neglected a thing or two for Runners of the female gender. Later on Proxiehunter (the character) posted that he does have an additional item that while good to have is a more substantial investment and needs to be ordered from specialized sources. A motorcycle jacket with plastic inserts for added protection. Good against fists, crowbars, baseball bats, and better than nothing against knives and claws plus it doesn't stand out like a Kevlar vest.

And remember what he facepalmed on another Runner doing, he explicitly stated the knife on your multitool is not for fighting with. If you're going to fight with it you want a knife designed for the job not a dinky little one that might snap off or collapse back in the handle.

Edit: Ah, a qualifier I hadn't noticed. Well, a lot of the list a high schooler probably already has or can boost from the 'rents before running. You probably don't want to steal their car though so that limits what you can carry.

Probably already have/can take from home before leaving: Duffel bag/Backpack, flashlight, cloths, soap, non-perishable food, base ball bat, pocket cash, possibly a cell phone, blanket/sleeping bag . . . Looking through the list again I think it's still applicable as a whole. You might have to buy the multitool and first aid kit but those are reasonably priced. It's just that they almost certainly will have to carry it all on their back because they don't want their parents to report their car stolen.

Something not on the list that came up later: colored chalk/markers for leaving Runner Signs.

Second edit: A couple points specific to teenagers. Depending on age truant officers and cops can be a real problem. You're supposed to be in school and you're supposed to live with your parents/guardians after all. If you can afford a half way decent one and look old enough they would benefit from a fake ID saying they're at least 18. Also helps with things like hotel rooms if they can somehow scrape up enough money, no place is going to rent a room to a 16 year old. On the other hand a decent sob story about why you're on the street so young (obviously not the real story) might help net a hand out of cash or food.

In addition, you might want to look for guides to living homeless. One thing I remember is garbage bags; they help for staying dry when you're sleeping outside, which is a major consideration. You don't want to die of hypothermia trying to avoid Slender Man, after all. Or ruin your expensive electronics.

I try going into this type of thing a lot in Wandering from Death. Basically, things are going to changed based on who the person is and what their situation is. For example, if your character is on the run from the police as well (Kenny is not yet 18 and therefore is not supposed to be running about. He's technically a missing person who doesn't want to be found), they're going to have to be very careful with money, since they can't use their bank account or credit cards.

And I don't have time to go into anything else at the moment, but I'll elaborate on some more things later.
