PostSubject: Adding new elements   Adding new elements EmptyMon Aug 06, 2012 5:30 am

I have been thinking of writing a blog myself , just wondering about how well received it would be by tying it loosely to the cthulu mythos since both mythos have similarities. Any advice would be welcome I do have a lot of love for the slenderverse and don't want to go to far with certain things as I've seen others do.

I don't know about the pure Slender Man blogs but it's been done in the Fear Mythos and no one burned down the authors houses or anything. I'm sure as long as it's well written you'll find people who will enjoy it.

Wll, If you tie it to the cthulu mythos, which I know barely anything about but some lets plays, sohuld be well recieved. I always love a good cameo (that makes sense). But I have just one tip for you, don't make slendy or cthulu related. It'd be like in the transformers movie how Megatron and Optimus are bros. I just want to seem them fight. :3

It's probably sub-optimal to tie Slendy into the Cthulhu Mythos overtly. It's been done so many times before.

Now, taking concepts or elements from the Cthulhu Mythos without naming where you got it from, that might work. Avoiding the use of famous names, hoary old tomes of forbidden lore, and so on would help keep your story from feeling derivative.

Really? While some stories have made reference to the Cthulhu Mythos, and comparisons are often brought up between the two, I think Mephi's the only that's extensively tied the settings together. And I don't think a single blog counts as overdone.

As for answering the original post: Whether or not you should tie them together depends on if you can actually pull such a crossover off. If you have a plan, and can combine the two Mythoses together in a way which feels natural and interesting to the readers, go for it. But while such a story has potential, it can also turn out backfiring on you if the readers think that it doesn't work, or that it feels like a fanfic crossover rather than a real setting.

True. I wasn't just talking about Slenderstories, though. Cthulhu and his pals have shown up all over the place, in movies, comics, novels, blog stories, and so on. It's not so much that someone would read a Slender Man/Cthulhu crossover and think, "every other blog does this," but rather that they'd think, "Didn't I see this in Hellboy? And that one B movie with Sam Neil?"

I do think your point about how including material that is famously fictional can break the realism of a Slenderstory is a very good one. It's hard enough for existing stories to maintain the "this is really happening" vibe, just from the sheer number of other stories out there.

/Incoming soapbox
Actually, when I said the story should feel natural, I meant within the context of the setting, not reality. I consider the obsession the Slenderverse has with "Immersion" to be one of its biggest handicaps. It made sense in the early days of the Mythos, when there was still a lot of mystery surrounding the setting (for the longest time, people were actually questioning whether or not The Tutorial was real, because M had such a strong dedication to remaining in character at all times.) The immersion is also needed for ARGs, because by definition, they have to be a story which blurs the lines between reality and the game. But for everything else, there's not much point these days. The OOG community has grown so large that we don't have this wall of mystery we used to. Most creators openly acknowledge their series as fictional, and communication between creators is usually OOG, rather than IG like it used to be. And yet so many series try to keep that facade of "This is really happening," in spite of it being blatantly obvious that no, it isn't. Which only serves to limit a lot of what the creator can do.
One of the better horror blogs in the 'verse is Nowhere, No One, Nothing. Does it achieve its horror through a story that could be actually happening in our world? No. Far from it: the blog is obviously fictional, taking place in a fantastic setting. And yet it manages to be one of the darkest, creepiest, and most unnerving blogs currently running because it portrays its fictional setting in a way that draws the readers into this fantastic setting. Meanwhile we've got more "realistic" blogs than anyone's willing to count out there which absolutely fail to create any sense of horror at all, in spite of making every effort to maintain the immersion that their story could be happening in our world. Willing suspension of belief is a powerful thing, and in most can be relied on much more than a reality perfect scenario.
/Removing soapbox

The prevalence and fame of Cthulhu is still an issue, though. Like you've said, they've appeared in practically everything there is, making it hard to also put them in the Slenderverse without it looking like a setting crossover just for the sake of crossing things over. I believe it's doable (I wouldn't be writing Mephi if I didn't think it possible,) but anyone planning to do so needs to work to make the combination of those two Mythoses seem like a natural part of the setting's rules. Just mashing both together by throwing Lovecraft monsters into a Slender Man story might come off as corny.

Nice soapbox you got there.

I agree that the total-immersion-all-the-time thing is a problem. It's certainly a hurdle for folks joining the story in progress, especially those who don't know about the immersion requirement ahead of time. It's one thing for those of us playing the game to preserve our immersion, but it's quite another to demand that same involvement from everyone who happens by.

Thanks for the link. I'm always looking for new stories to try.
