| So I use After Effects for my smexy video distortion and such, and while I've found it far more accessible and user-friendly than I was expecting it to be, I'm very aware that I don't really know how to use it to more than about 1% of its potential.
What I would really like to know is if there is any way to "automate" effects parameters; i.e., to adjust them over the course of the clip
Because AE reminds me a lot of audio sequencing programs (e.g. Cubase) I'm sort of hopeful that there is. If so, it might save me a lot of needless pissing about, because at the moment if I want to ramp up my Slendystortion, I have to render three or four versions of the same clip with different effects parameters and then edit them together on iMovie, which is a painstaking task and a massive ballache.
Unfortunately, while AE runs better than I expected on my laptop, it still takes a long time to load up and/or render, so it's difficult to get in and experiment with it the way I would with audio stuff.
So: anyone have any ideas?

| MacBook, Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SCRAM
I have no idea what much of that means.

| hmm alright, well i don't think i can help you with speed. Sounds like you need to run some tutorials on how to create affects. Do you have a desktop that's a little more powerful?
i tried looking up on automation, i am still researching. ill keep you apprised.

It's a bit annoying but then I remember waiting 10+ minutes for my old Amstrad games to load up and figure I'm actually still getting a pretty good deal.

| If it's anything like Sony Vegas (which is my program of choice) I'd look for some kind of tick mark named "Effects Envelope". I can show you screens of Vegas doing just that thing, but that's about all I've got here. | |

| For changing an effect gradually... I'm not sure what you mean but.. Keyframing? is that what your problem is? If you just set one in one place and one in another, it will gradually apply the effect. | |

Keyframing? is that what your problem is? If you just set one in one place and one in another, it will gradually apply the effect. This sounds about right. So you'd say "at point x, I want this effect to be at this level, at point y I want this effect to be at this other level" and then it blends between the two?

| Yes. It divides the progression of the effect equally across the span you created. And It doesn't have to be just x and Y. You can make as many keyframes as there are frames. | |
