The Future of Slenderseries' Empty
PostSubject: The Future of Slenderseries'   The Future of Slenderseries' EmptyTue Mar 18, 2014 11:48 am

So recently I've been thinking about the lack of really good, new slenderseries coming out. Every once in a while I'll go back and re-watch MH, TT, EMH, and recently I started re-watching DH00. These series, in my opinion, were way better than the rest, probably because they were the first few on the scene and set a standard. While I've seen other good slenderseries like realmadnessx (I wasn't a fan of MLA and CNS), I can't help but notice that the few I've mentioned above stand out so much more in my memory.

What do you guys think about future slender series? Do you think we'll ever get a new series quite as good as the ones that are already out, or do you think that the mytos "peaked" back in 2009-2011? I really love the mythos and I'd hate to see it die out. Comments?

P.S. If you think you know of a good series that I haven't seen yet, please post it down below and I'll check it out, but I've seen almost all the ones posted to this site and some others from UF so I feel like I've seen mostly all of them.

More series need to do what I did (sorry if I'm whoring my ARG here :/ )

Basically, have a base plot, one that is the stories key elements, characters and scenes, and leave it at that. Have your audience lead your characters and decide their fate. It's like playing a game.

You have a monster on the other side of the door. As the viewers if you should open the door (not knowing the monster is there). They say no, good job, they are leading your character in the right path. They say yes, oh no they just screwed up your character.

That's what we need more of. I mean, The Riddle of the Tree Man is basically run by a few PMers that know nothing of the actual plot, but they give Hero advice, and he takes it and tries to go about dealing with the plotted situations. Even then to make it that much better, I have an IG!Plot book that the antagonists have that change the series and it's plot entirely.
for example (SPOILER):
. The viewers and PMers basically help this poor, frightened character deal with the fact that everything is quite possibly a lie, and that is what drives the story. Someone PM'ed me to talk with the antagonist, and sure enough that just led right into the season's finale sequence involving a whole mess of series changing events.

But enough of my shit.
We need more of this. People get bored of watching. They want to actually help the character rather than stand by and watch TOTHEARK MASKY CLONE #13498479213647981276489 mess up some videos and talk in 1s and 0s. If you want a series to be memorable, I'm pretty sure all the viewers are going to remember how that one thing they said just got the main character's finger chopped off and mailed to an alternate dimension pizza parlor.

Honestly, I think we are at a lack of good series right now... because for a project like the Slender Man Mythos, I define "good" as "groundbreaking". Allow me to explain:

Marble Hornets is one of the first things that is called groundbreaking to the mythos. It was the first Slender Man series, and was made as much "from scratch" as you can be without [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. And the reason it still holds up is not that it "did things first" as much as it is that it did things well. Many things considered cliché to the mythos now worked well in Marble Hornets because they were used for a reason. And with all the biggest series, there was a lot more dedication than there seems to be now. Right now, the 'Verse just seems stuck in a loop of unhappiness standstill, because a lot of series are getting abandoned as soon as they're made.

What the mythos needs is innovation- and more importantly, dedication. By innovation, I mean something that stays true to what the monster should be, but provides something unique and substantial. Taking old tropes and making them your own, and such. And by dedication, I mean setting a high standard. Like, imagine that your series is the first Slender Man series that someone is going to watch. That kind of dedication.

P.S. I'm not trying to insult any creators or series- I'm just saying the Mythos is in need of a creative spark as a whole.

Peppercorn sorry i have to disagree with you, there are really several not so big series that have a lot of innovation, new ideas and also dedication from its creators, that´s one of the reasons why i made slendyweek, to show the people that there are more innovative and  good series and to make the different series (to the most part made by VERY dedicated creators) be noticed by the fandom. The problem is often not the dedication, but mostly surprising happenings or sudden very bad circumstances that the creators face IRL, which makes it harder to maintain the series and often brings them to either change their plans completely or to abadon the series.

Thank you, Micool for stroking my massive ego <3

But I don't think we are not having good series' I simply think that they are

A) Not getting a lot of exposure
and
B) Not trying new things

Time to toot my own horn

In my series, I started doing something different.
Something to my knowledge, no one else has done.
I integrated traditional cinematography with my documentary footage.

At first Pavel was like any other series. But now it jumps between the main character filming and showing what happens off camera in the same style you would see in a film or TV show. A fan not too long ago even told me they loved watching Pavel Hall cause it was different and felt like a TV show.

TL;DR People don't get enough exposure, and the rules are meant to be broken. Hard.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but OurGodEvil did this about a year ago. I don't know how old your series is though, so maybe you did it before then?

Mine is getting towards its second year. But I am glad someone else is doing it!!

Up until now whenever I would say "I have traditional cinematography" everyone I talked to says "Wow, never seen that before"

But then again that pushes my idea of SERIES' NEED MORE EXPOSURE!

It´s fun, i just wanted to say the same about OGE having done it (or rather tried and horribly failed), but then i wasn´t really shure if i should post it xD
In any case, your series was the first that did it in a good way^^

Yeah this basically wraps up how I feel in a nutshell. There just seems to be a lack of new characters that I care about. Even if the vlog tries stuff new they still have Standard Protagonist A + Sidekick + Possible TTA Ripoff. I have to care about what happens to the character, therefore I have to care about the character themselves. Don't plan out an intricate plot and then just play "yourself" because you're probably boring. And this isn't targeting anybody in particular, I'm just saying in general.

On the note of Pavel Hall, I've tried watching it like twice or so and each time I get to about the same part (relatively early on) and I just loose interest. Nothing personal, just not my thing really. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Hey, Elysium was pretty fucking good if you ask me.  I thought Winter wasn't bad either, but Archive was really short, and Elder Gods was really bad.  I will debate Elysium if you would like though.

Not sure why I have it in my sig... I think I found it, watched Elysium, put it in the sig, and kind of just left it.

Unless you meant they failed at the actual cinematography part, which I would ask you to please elaborate on.

I totally understand, I personally hate most of season 1 for a multitude of reasons and I would kill someone for a chance to go back and do it well. I'm sorry you can't get into it, I understand though that I am not everyone's cup of tea.

If it means anything, I started watching it again for the first few episodes. I don't know how far I'll get but when I get a few minutes here and there I'll try to stop by the channel and continue on. Hopefully once I get through the first season like you said I'll enjoy it more. Either way, keep doing what you're doing Very Happy

When I first made my series, I had an idea: To do it in the anti-hero sort of view: aka like a Proxy. I did it for fun, and thanks to Tails, Sal, and Josiah I do have some viewers.

When it boils down to it, I think it's because the big ones are still continuing and people don't have time for much else. Also, I'm afraid of how much longer our smaller ones will last when the top five do end.

I still think it's fun to write though!

Internet trends come and go, but horror evolves. What I guess I'm getting at is that although the day may come when the Slender Man mythos is no longer popular on the internet and the most popular vlogs and blogs end, the people who contributed will have made their impact and have baptised themselves in the blood of the horror genre. If just one creator, actor, writer or fan goes on to do something cool having found their love of horror through the Slender Man, then it was time well spent.

And who's to say the next big horror phenomenon isn't just around the corner...?

This is definitely true. I think it's more of a nostalgia thing for me, which is kind of weird considering I only discovered the Slenderman mythos in like December of 2011. I just miss the enigma of it all; the mythos being fresh and like nothing I've ever seen or heard before (As I don't watch horror films). My strong sense of curiosity convinced me to keep watching Marble Hornets for hours the first night I discovered it, despite hating scary shows, movies, games, etc. I so badly wanted MH to be real and it excited me greatly, and then I watched TT, EMH, and DH00, and it fueled the passion. Now it's seemed to die off and I miss it. It was like a high... Well anyway. Here's to all to come of the slenderman mythos   Smile    [/EmotionalMonologue]

It's pretty difficult for new series' to live up to the legend-like reputation of the big three (MH, TT, EMH) and every single new blog or vlog will be compared to them. If they're too similar, they'll be called copycats, if they're too different they'll lose audiences who like to keep stuff familiar. It's damn hard to be a creator!

To a large extent I think the problem lies with the community, and their unreasonable expectations for how fast a project evolves.

Most of the big series were way inferior when they started out, than they are in their current form. It took the creators of these series years to develop their stories into what they are today. I think people were more patient with the vloggers back in the day, because there was simply less content to choose from and compare with. Now however we compare every new project starting up with the first generation of series, and unfairly so in my opinion, as any project needs time to develop and evolve.

I think this is especially the case with people who have come into the mythos more recently, as they lack an understanding and appreciation of how long it took for the big series to really pick up and engage a large audience.

While this may be true, I personally enjoyed the first two seasons of MH more than I do this current one. This leads me to believe that it isn't the development of a series that captures new viewers, it's the initial starting that has to do it; something that new series shouldn't have an excuse not to do if they really tried and were creative a bit.

This is definitely the case, I myself find that I'm always comparing new series to the big three. If it's a copy, it's not as good, and if it strays too far, well then "Thats not what slendy would do...." so it's basically a lose-lose scenario. Perhaps when the mythos completely lies inactive for a few years, then a new series can come along that's close enough to the originals where it won't be frowned upon (because they'll be long over and people will miss them) but they can be new enough to adapt to the current horror genre of the future. I guess patience is key here...
