PostSubject: Masked Proxies - A good idea?   Masked Proxies - A good idea? EmptySun Aug 25, 2013 12:16 pm

On the topic of Masked Proxies: Is this something that a Slenderman/Fear series can include freely or is this too Marble Hornets?  Will it bring my series more in line with the other Slenderman/Fear properties, or do I run the risk of appearing as just a ripoff of other series?

I have an arc that I'm working on (Spoilers!) that may or may not be well served with a masked pro/antagonist.  I'm not just talking about someone with an obscured face, but a decorated white face mask.

SlenderNation, how does this make you feel?

It's ok to a proxy to wear a mask if it fits the personality and appearance.

My advice would be to focus on the actual character, and don't worry so much about whether or not he looks like something another series has done. As long as the character has interesting properties, motivations, methods, conflicts with the protagonist etc. and feels like a unique character, then nothing looks wise should be off limits.

Very good points, thank you.  I'm putting a lot of work into the character itself, but I know people can be picky sometimes.  Thanks!

IMO, it's not a good idea unless you have to do it to help build the character, like this entire idea of proxies from the beginning was in fact a false assumption about Marble Hornets
Spoiler:
Like if there's a reasonable explanation for the person owning a mask then go for it, but I can't see that situation being a common thing.

I mean, if you have the proxy as a character in the series but don't want to reveal who it is, masks are good ideas.
The fact that this guy is wearing a mask doesn't always mean they are proxies, but it is a pretty big hint. Personally I find that masked proxies are overused in the sense that so many new series are starting to overusde the idea with pointless masked people showing up or being introduced without an overall point to them.

Another thing, try to go beyond just a mask, maybe a bag or some type of headwear could work. I used a burlap sack for mine (because its face is three large mouths) because a mask really didn't fit who I wanted to create.

Masks make sense, cliche or not. The proxy probably wants to hide their identity. ESPECIALLY if they're somebody the characters live near/know personally.

However, you can just as easily do proxies without masks IMO. Facepaint, bandanas, sunglasses, facial disfigurement, or just really big hoods... All would serve to make them difficult to recognise. And there's nothing wrong with them looking totally normal, and not hiding their face, if you execute it well.

Masks are good. They are safe and do the job right. BUT, Masks are definitely not the only way one could hide there identity. I'd like to see a Slendy Vlog give that a shot!

They are good, but are often misused. Make sure you Masked Proxy is different from what people have seen before and if it isn't, find a reason for us to be afraid or care about it.

Lots of good discussion in the thread, thanks very much. It gives me a lot to go on, and I think I'll be able to work it in without it being too cliche.

Thanks, and keep an eye on the channel - I've got a lot of good stuff coming out in the next month or two!
