I think that this could mean "the" iteration theory that was so popular all that time is false. Someone posted this on UF, and I find it to be very likely.

I think this can explain what happened to Alex. Jeff is part of the Mining Town Four, along with Steph, Vinnie and Evan, right? So they're plucked from time and hidden in new lives, like a supernatural witness protection program (accomplished via either direct action by a benevolent entity like Dr. Corenthal, or through the Iteration Cycle). They're still connected to one another through friendship, but they're placed into separate families. This happens relatively recently, like in the last ten years. Their memories are modified to match their current situations; Evan remembers his sister and so on.
Jeff, though, is placed in a family with a younger brother. When the weirdness begins and Alex's parents are killed, Alex starts to crack up. We all remember the incredible awkwardness that filled a room every time he walked on camera, and it only got worse when Sparky died.
I think Alex started to go a little crazy because he started to remember two disparate timelines; one in which he was an only child, one in which he had Jeff as an older brother. His memories were rewritten when Jeff was placed there, but the job wasn't as clean as it was on the others for some reason. Either that or the trauma knocked some mental shrapnel loose and he wasn't able to reconcile the two separate memory streams. He struggled with which one actually happened, and when he finally came to the realization that what we've seen is the real course of his life (just a little bit after saying "I know that's not my dog," in reference to the sock-puppet)-- basically, when he's ready to jump in and actually help instead of just screw around and be screwed around with-- he's taken by Slendy (and bagged, or brought to HABIT's house, or whatever happened to him).
Basically, Alex was affected with a memory perception filter that fell apart when he looked at it closely enough, and it messed him up pretty badly.
The point is that people have theorized that the Rake was targeting Alex because he wasn't part of the Iteration and thus had to be culled or whatever. I think they're half correct. I think he was targeted for one of two possible reasons: either he had already started to try to reconcile the two memories and had to be stopped in order to prevent him from revealing the truth to the Hybrids, or the Rake wanted his real memories to surface and he was stopped before he could fully come to terms with it.

By the way, the title translates to "the first course."
Does that mean we get a second course? Dessert?

Spoiler:
Le premier cours will be the appetizer, the hor d'ouerve. The second course will be the entree
.
Spoiler:
So...they are clones of the originals rather than reincarnations. My mind has just been fucked now by the realization O_O

Oh, sorry about that.
I'll just edit it in next time
Not sure what series your post spoils (tails), but either way, I won't do it again.
Also, I think Amuse-Bouche is the appetizer. It kind of means that indirectly from what the wikipedia page on it says

Liked that theory a lot, knifeman. It helped put this together for me.
Spoiler:
So, I'm pretty fucking concerned for other courses, considering the conclusions drawn at this point. #UnnervingAsHell

Oh dear, seems this series might be drawing to a close before too long I was a little bit disappointed in how Vin just suddenly figures it out, out of the blue, but I guess they might have felt they had painted themselves somewhat into corner at this point.
God, I love where this is going so far.
This quote actually made me excited here's why:
Honestly, I don't think this series is near ending. I mean, before too long is sort of a vague description of time and you and I may be on the same page in terms of it ending or not, but thinking about where this series is actually makes me really excited.
Because this isn't the end of the (metaphorical) book, though the back cover is certainly closer than the front. This is the good part - the bottom of the climax mountain, the start to the real push towards a goal. It's the point in a book where you can't put it down because the pace is killing you and you can't stop here. For instance, it's the moment when the rebels in Star Wars Episode IV find the vulnerable point in the Death Star - they have what they need. They know what they're doing. All they have to do is get out there and do it, and that's where EveryMan is now. They have an idea of what's going on, they're way more informed than before.
The exciting bit is seeing what they do with what they know. And god I hope they don't make us wait for more because just thinking about this is fucking killing me.

Spoiler:
I mean, the whole storywriting thing could be a possibility, but how? How could it be put into motion?
