NEVER USE WINDOWS LIVE MOVIE MAKER. EVER EVER EVER!!

If you're going to do that, use Movie maker 2.6 with THIS ENHANCEMENT PACK which provides over 400 new objects.

I've used that along with Avid Studio PRO and Adobe PS

I use Videopad, which is free... sort of? It's a full version for two weeks. After that, you can pay to have the full version forever or not pay to have the free version; the only difference I've noticed there is it doesn't let you save movies as FLV or MP4s.
It sometimes isn't the best, but for a free editor it does alright.
